Surinam Airways leadership and operational crisis

Surinam Airways (SLM) has encountered a period of leadership instability and operational difficulties. The airline’s Supervisory Board accepted the resignation of Marlon Telting, the president-commissioner, following a dispute regarding his expected appointment as a second director. During this time, the carrier also faced regional flight disruptions and schedule changes caused by a technical defect with aircraft PZ-TCX in Guyana.

Following these events, the airline’s management and financial model have come under political scrutiny. VHP parliamentarian Mahinder Jogi questioned the sustainability of government subsidies, noting that an estimated USD 25 million to USD 30 million has been injected into the carrier over the last year without significant structural improvements.

In response to ongoing flight delays and reputational damage, stakeholders are calling for management reforms. There are increasing demands for a professional management team with aviation and finance expertise to replace political appointments, ensuring a clear separation between political oversight and daily operations.
