Surrey police conclude investigation after suspect in 2024 fire attack found dead

Surrey police have concluded an attempted murder investigation following the death of Kalid Yimer, the sole suspect in a 2024 fire attack. Yimer, 33, was identified after human remains were discovered in a forested area of the Fleetwood neighbourhood in August.

Investigators stated that no criminality is believed to be involved in Yimer’s death. He was the primary suspect in an August 2, 2024, incident where a man was doused in accelerant and set on fire in the 10200 block of City Parkway. The victim sustained serious injuries in the attack, and a stolen vehicle used during the crime was recovered shortly after.

With the suspect's death, the attempted murder charge has been dropped. Staff Sgt. Tara Nicholls noted that while the true motive for the attack may remain unknown, the identity of the person responsible has been established.
