SUS provides specialized healthcare to indigenous communities in Ceará

Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) is conducting a specialized medical outreach program in indigenous territories within the state of Ceará. The initiative aims to reduce the backlog of specialized care in remote areas where distance and transportation difficulties often prevent access to services.

The program is expected to benefit approximately 11,000 indigenous people across 79 villages. Scheduled activities include consultations and procedures in municipalities such as Itarema and Crateús. The medical services offered include ophthalmology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and women’s health, as well as procedures like colposcopy and the insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs).

This action is part of the ‘Agora Tem Especialistas’ program, established by Law No. 15.233. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Support to SUS Management (AgSUS) and the Suel Abujamra Institute through the ‘Aldeia em Foco’ project. The effort covers several indigenous groups, including the Tremembé, Potyguara, Kariri, Kalabaça, Tabajara, Tupinambá, and Gavião peoples.
