Sustainability initiatives promote repair and heritage maintenance in the Netherlands

Various initiatives in the Netherlands and Flanders are promoting sustainability and preservation through dedicated awareness weeks.

In Helmond, the National Repair Week (October 10–18) focuses on encouraging citizens to repair broken items rather than discarding them. To combat the high volume of electronic waste, the city is hosting free workshops and an exhibition titled ‘Mooi Stuk’ at the Huis voor de Stad. Activities include repairing tableware, bicycle maintenance at the Beginstation, and creative clothing repair workshops at the Annatheater.

Additionally, Monumentenwacht is launching the first ‘Week of Maintenance’ in October 2026 across the Netherlands and Flanders. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of preventive maintenance for heritage sites. By promoting regular, small-scale upkeep, the organization seeks to help owners preserve historic buildings, reduce long-term costs, and ensure the sustainability of cultural heritage.
