European community repair and sustainability initiatives

Overview

Sustainability initiatives across Europe are increasingly focusing on repair and reuse to reduce environmental impact and waste.

In the Netherlands, the ‘Wear For Life’ campaign in Amsterdam aims to encourage residents to repair, swap, and purchase second-hand clothing. Local efforts include the Repair Café Galecop in Nieuwegein and the continued operation of the Timulazu thrift store in Heino under Dorcas management. Dorcas, supported by approximately 4,000 volunteers, operates 46 thrift stores in the Netherlands to fund projects in thirteen countries across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

To reduce event waste, the Circulair Warenhuis has introduced a rental service for reusable lanyards following a trial at Leiden Meets Circulair 2026.

New awareness campaigns are active in October 2026. In Helmond, the National Repair Week (October 10–18) features workshops and the ‘Mooi Stuk’ exhibition to combat electronic waste. In the province of Utrecht, National Repair Week is being hosted by the Natuur en Milieufederatie Utrecht (NMU) in collaboration with local municipalities and Repair Cafés to demonstrate that broken products do not have to be discarded. This initiative aligns with the European ‘Right to Repair’ movement.

In Belgium, the 21st Repair Café is scheduled for October 17 in Oosterzele at the GILO primary school, where volunteers will offer free repairs for electronics, textiles, toys, and garden tools, alongside bicycle safety checks by the Fietsersbond.

In Germany, the Reparatur Wuppertal group is coordinating with Repair Café International to invite all repair cafés in North Rhine-Westphalia to attempt a world record in October 2026 by performing as many repairs as possible within a single month. In Langenselbold, local sessions continue to promote the motto ‘Repair instead of throwing away’ for bicycles, toys, and tools.
