Sustainable Development Goals face delays as 2030 deadline nears
Global progress toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is falling behind the pace required to meet the 2030 deadline. According to an OPEC report citing UN data, only 36% of the 139 targets with sufficient data are on track or making moderate progress. Nearly half of the targets are advancing too slowly or stagnating, while 15% have regressed below 2015 levels.
Developing nations face a significant $4 trillion annual financing gap, compounded by a 23.1% decline in official development assistance in 2025. While progress has been noted in areas such as water, sanitation, and digital connectivity, efforts are being hindered by conflict, climate change, rising debt, and slower economic growth.
In India, the SDG India Index shows measurable improvement, with the national composite score rising to 71 from 57 in 2018. While indicators show progress across all states and union territories, challenges remain in translating national metrics into tangible improvements in local areas such as hunger, gender equality, and quality education.
