Global progress toward Sustainable Development Goals

United Nations data indicates that global progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is significantly lagging. Reports show that only 36% of the 139 targets with sufficient data are currently on track, while nearly half are progressing too slowly and 15% have regressed since 2015.

Key obstacles include a massive annual funding deficit estimated at four trillion dollars and a 23.1% decline in official development assistance in 2025. While there has been measurable progress in digital connectivity, water, and sanitation, these gains are being undermined by climate change, conflict, rising debt, and economic stagnation. Specific concerns remain regarding food insecurity and extreme poverty.

Gender equality remains a critical area of concern, with projections suggesting parity may not be achieved until 2197. While women’s representation in national parliaments reached 27.4% in 2026, progress is slowing due to declining funding and the dismantling of equality institutions.

On a regional level, India has shown improvement in its national composite SDG score, rising to 71 from 57 in 2018, though challenges persist in addressing local hunger, education, and gender equality.
