Suurhoffbrug closure costs transport sector 600,000 euros daily

The partial closure of the Suurhoffbrug on the A15 highway is costing the transport sector an estimated 600,000 euros per day. The disruption follows the discovery of cracks in a main girder during an inspection by Rijkswaterstaat. As a result, traffic heading toward the Maasvlakte has been diverted to the hard shoulder, effectively halving the capacity to reach Europe’s largest container terminals.

A survey conducted by industry organizations Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) and Deltalinqs indicates that three-quarters of surveyed companies report employees facing 15 to 60 minutes of additional travel time daily. The economic impact stems from increased fuel consumption, higher labor costs, missed terminal time slots, and reduced daily trips.

The disruption affects not only port companies but also the broader European logistics chain and consumers. Beyond transport delays, the situation complicates shift changes and impacts thousands of contractors working on construction and maintenance projects in the area. Rijkswaterstaat is currently working on a temporary solution to redirect traffic in both directions via the new, eastern Suurhoffbrug.
