Suzuki launches eVitara as India becomes global EV manufacturing hub

Suzuki has launched the eVitara, its first battery-electric vehicle (BEV), marking a significant shift for the Japanese manufacturer. Developed in collaboration with Toyota, the compact SUV measures 4.28 meters in length and features a practical, solid interior design focused on utility rather than luxury.

India has emerged as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for this model. The e VITARA is being produced in India for export to over 100 countries, including Japan and various European markets. This development is part of a broader expansion of India’s electric vehicle ecosystem, which has seen significant growth driven by national policies like the FAME scheme and the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan.

India’s EV market has seen rapid scaling, with sales increasing from 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.3 million units in 2025. The shift is motivated by goals to reduce petroleum imports, combat urban air pollution, and lower transport-related greenhouse gas emissions.
