Suzuki to Export Japan‑spec Light EV to Europe from 2027

Suzuki Motor Corporation announced that it will export a Japanese‑spec lightweight electric vehicle, the Vision e‑Sky, to Europe beginning in 2027. Production of the model will start at the Kosai plant in Shizuoka during fiscal year 2026. The vehicle conforms to Japan’s kei‑car dimensions (under 3.4 m length, 1.48 m width) and is designed to meet the EU’s new “M1E” small‑EV category, which was partly inspired by Japan’s standards.

The Vision e‑Sky is expected to have a range of over 270 km and a price below £2,000 (around ¥4 million) in the United Kingdom, with plans to sell in other European markets such as Italy. Suzuki’s strategy emphasizes low investment and low cost, aiming to fill a niche for compact, affordable EVs amid a market shift away from larger, pricier models. The move also seeks to counter growing competition from Chinese manufacturers like BYD, which are expanding in Europe despite recent tariffs.

Analysts note that the vehicle’s compact size could be advantageous in narrow European city streets, and its modest performance may suit short‑distance commuting and second‑car use. However, uncertainties remain regarding eligibility for EU “super‑credit” incentives, which currently favor vehicles produced within the bloc.
