Sviatohirsk Lavra monastery attack leaves one monk dead

A violent attack by a group of unknown individuals occurred on the morning of August 23, 2026, at the Sviatohirsk Lavra, an Orthodox monastery located in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. The incident took place near the Church of Saint Nicholas within the monastery grounds.

The attack resulted in the death of monk Barsanofii (Turianskyi). Two other individuals, monk Grigorii and a refugee named Andrii Kyriienko, sustained serious injuries. Grigorii suffered multiple stab wounds, including a penetrating lung injury, while Kyriienko is reported to be in even more critical condition with similar lung trauma.

Following the incident, the injured were transported to hospitals in Sloviansk and later to Kharkiv for specialized medical care. Local authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the attack, which is currently ongoing.
