Sviatohirsk Lavra monastery attack

Overview

On August 23, 2026, a group of unknown individuals launched a violent attack at the Sviatohirsk Lavra, an Orthodox monastery in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. The incident, which occurred near the Church of Saint Nicholas, resulted in the death of monk Barsanofii (Turianskyi).

Two other individuals, monk Grigorii and a refugee named Andrii Kyriienko, sustained serious injuries, including penetrating lung wounds. The injured were moved from hospitals in Sloviansk to Kharkiv for specialized care. Local authorities have initiated a criminal investigation into the attack.
