Swabia South/West reports rise in fatal traffic accidents

Police in the Swabia South/West region of Germany reported a significant increase in fatal traffic accidents during the first half of 2026. Fatal accidents rose by 37.5 percent, increasing from 16 to 22 incidents, while the number of fatalities rose by 50 percent, from 16 to 24 people.

Victims included car occupants, motorcyclists, quad riders, cyclists, and pedestrians. Notably, there was a 57 percent increase in accidents involving individuals over 65 and a 150 percent increase in accidents involving young adults aged 21 to 25. Primary causes of accidents remain speeding, distraction, and failure to yield.

In a separate incident in Augsburg on August 16, 2026, a collision occurred at the intersection of Mühlhauser Straße and Bürgermeister-Wegele-Straße. A 47-year-old driver is suspected of running a red light, resulting in approximately 15,000 euros in property damage. No injuries were reported in the Augsburg collision.
