UK heatwave sees teenage drownings at Lincoln lake and Manchester reservoir

A 16‑year‑old boy died after falling into difficulty at Swanholme Lakes in Lincolnshire on 9 July. He was rescued by Lincolnshire Police, Fire and Rescue and the East Midlands Ambulance Service but later died in hospital. The incident follows the death of 15‑year‑old Declan Sawyer at the same lake in May, prompting the City of Lincoln Council to consider a pilot scheme of wardens to monitor open‑water sites.

On 10 July, 18‑year‑old Karl Holland was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester Police launched extensive enquiries and issued a public warning about the dangers of open water during the record‑breaking heatwave that has pushed temperatures above 30 °C across England and Wales.
