Sweden adds €3 customs fee on low‑value online orders from US and China

From 1 July, Sweden will charge a €3 customs fee on every online purchase worth up to €150 that is shipped from outside the EU, targeting goods from the United States and China. The charge is applied per item, meaning that orders containing multiple products may incur the fee more than once. The fee is not refunded if the consumer returns a flawless item, a measure intended to discourage careless ordering. Consumer‑rights expert Maria Wiezell said the rule aims to limit the influx of cheap imports that often bypass safety and chemical‑use regulations, adding that “Det blir dyrt att ångra sig” (It becomes expensive to regret). The new charge also applies when a retailer based in the EU ships from a non‑EU warehouse, shifting responsibility to the buyer to verify the origin of the goods.
