Sweden advances proposal to criminalize gang participation
The Swedish government and the Sweden Democrats are advancing a proposal to criminalize participation in criminal gangs. To implement this measure, a constitutional amendment is required.
Under the proposed law, standard participation would carry a maximum sentence of four years in prison, while gang leaders could face life imprisonment. The government is set to decide on the specific legal phrasing for the new offense. If the Tidö parties win the upcoming election, they intend to present a proposition with the goal of the law taking effect on April 1, 2027. While the Social Democrats and the Left Party have accepted the necessary constitutional changes, the Center Party and the Green Party remain opposed.
