Sweden announces Gripen jet and drone aid package for Ukraine

Sweden unveiled a $2.7 billion assistance package for Ukraine. Around $400 million will be earmarked for the domestic production of Ukrainian drones, allowing rapid, locally‑controlled manufacturing and deployment. The deal also includes the donation of 16 JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter aircraft, scheduled for delivery beginning early 2027, with Ukraine planning to purchase an additional 20 Gripen E/F jets worth roughly $2.9 billion by 2030. The Gripens are expected to be equipped with Meteor long‑range air‑to‑air missiles, which could keep Russian bombers such as the Su‑34 out of range of Ukrainian air defenses. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasised that the support strengthens Ukraine’s right to self‑defence and also enhances Sweden’s own security. The package builds on earlier Swedish contributions that have included NLAW anti‑tank missiles, Leopard 2 tanks, CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, Archer artillery systems and reconnaissance aircraft, marking a shift toward financing Ukraine’s own defence‑industry capabilities.
