Sweden blocks Tesla FSD EU approval over speed‑offset feature

Swedish transport authorities have warned the European Union’s Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV) that Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving (FSD) system should be rejected unless the “Speed Offset” function – which lets the car drive above the posted speed limit – is removed. The Swedish Transport Administration sent a letter on 30 April stating that Sweden’s representative will only support the rollout if the speeding capability is stripped out. The TCMV is scheduled to discuss the issue on 30 June, with a formal EU‑wide vote to follow.

Tesla already holds provisional approvals for FSD in the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark and Belgium, but under EU rules those approvals lapse after six months unless a qualified majority of member states backs the technology. If Sweden can rally other skeptical Nordic countries, the provisional approvals could expire, forcing Tesla to withdraw the software from those markets. The decision matters for Tesla’s European sales strategy, especially as the company faces growing competition from low‑cost Chinese electric‑vehicle makers.
