Sweden center-left opposition wins parliamentary election by narrow margin
Sweden’s center-left opposition has secured a narrow victory in the parliamentary election, according to public broadcaster SVT. With 99% of votes counted, the opposition bloc is projected to win 175 of the 349 seats in the Riksdag, narrowly surpassing the incumbent right-wing coalition led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, which is projected to hold 174 seats.
The margin between the two blocs is exceptionally slim, with only 26,169 votes separating them. The Social Democrats, led by Magdalena Andersson, emerged as the largest single party with approximately 28% of the vote and 99 seats. In a shift for the right-wing landscape, the Sweden Democrats saw a decline to 17.5% of the vote, while the Moderate Party regained dominance within that political space. SVT stated that the likelihood of the election result being overturned is extremely low, though final counts involving overseas and late ballots are expected to continue through Thursday.
