Sweden election results show narrow lead for centre-left
Overview
The September 2026 Swedish general election has resulted in a narrow victory for the center-left opposition bloc. The red-green parties secured approximately 175 to 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag, providing a slim majority over the outgoing right-wing Tidö bloc, which holds 173 to 174 seats. Following the finalization of the vote count, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation. Speaker of the Parliament Andreas Norlén has tasked Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, with attempting to form a new government.
Government formation remains complicated by intense deadlock and policy fragmentation within the opposition. While the Social Democrats lead the bloc, analysis indicates a lack of political clarity; Ipsos reported that only 25 percent of voters perceived the Social Democrats-led alternative as clear, compared to 54 percent who found the Tidö parties' platform more distinct. Discrepancies regarding migration, crime reforms, climate change, and forest policy have emerged between the Social Democrats, the Left Party, the Centre Party, and the Green Party. Specifically, the Centre Party has expressed opposition to forming a government that includes the Left Party in ministerial roles.
In contrast, the Moderate Party has overtaken the Sweden Democrats as the second-largest force in the country, following a major setback for the Sweden Democrats, whose parliamentary presence decreased from 73 to 62 seats. Locally, political shifts are also evident, such as in Finspång, where the Liberal Party saw gains after distancing itself from the Sweden Democrats. Uncertainty persists as officials continue to count overseas ballots from over 250,000 Swedish expats.
