Sweden Democrats lose seats in election, causing government collapse

The Sweden Democrats (SD) have experienced a significant setback in the recent parliamentary election, losing eleven mandates. This loss has resulted in the collapse of the Tidö government. Analysts suggest the party is facing an internal crisis as its core narrative—linking immigration to national problems—struggles to maintain credibility while voters face economic challenges such as unemployment and rising living costs.

During the election campaign, SD leader Jimmie Åkesson faced criticism for his dismissal of the Climate Policy Council, stating he believes the council is “principally wrong in everything they say.” Political scientist Fredrik von Malmborg noted that such rhetoric is characteristic of populist movements, suggesting it serves to delegitimize scientific research and independent media by rejecting information that contradicts party convictions.
