Sweden e-scooter accidents rise sharply in Gothenburg and Södertälje

Sweden recorded a 45 % increase in e‑scooter accidents in 2025, leaving 6,498 injured people and seven fatalities nationwide. The rise follows a national trend of more accidents on densely populated streets and during night hours.

In Gothenburg, police data show that three central streets – Kungsportsavenyn, Skånegatan and Vasagatan – accounted for 60 police‑attended collisions, a disproportionate share of the city’s total. Young men under 25 are heavily over‑represented, making up about two‑thirds of the seriously injured, and night‑time crashes (19:00‑07:00) grew by 29 %. Single‑vehicle accidents remain the majority, but collisions are increasing rapidly.

Södertälje reported its highest ever count of e‑scooter crashes – 15 incidents in 2025, three more than the previous year. The municipality’s spike mirrors the broader national surge, with Stockholm County logging 1,203 accidents, the most in the region. The growing injury rates have intensified debate over traffic safety measures, helmet use and stricter regulations for rental e‑scooters.
