Sweden education faces preschool overcrowding and declining literacy
Educational challenges are mounting in Sweden, highlighted by overcrowding in Lund's preschools and declining literacy rates among teenagers.
In Lund, a survey by the union Sveriges Lärare reveals that 70 percent of preschool groups exceed the National Agency for Education's recommended sizes. Some groups contain as many as 24 children, significantly higher than the recommended maximum of 14 for that age bracket. Teachers report increased stress and difficulties managing children with special needs due to staff shortages and large group sizes.
Simultaneously, recent PISA results indicate a decline in reading comprehension among Swedish 15-year-olds. Scores have dropped by 21 points since 2022, with 31 percent of students failing to reach basic proficiency levels. Professor Linda Fälth has called for more concrete political policies, emphasizing that systematic instruction from skilled teachers is more critical than simply encouraging more reading time.
