Swedish preschool and education challenges

Sweden is facing significant challenges and debates within its early childhood education system. Initial reports highlighted structural issues in Lund, where a survey by the union Sveriges Lärare found that 70 percent of preschool groups exceeded recommended sizes, with some containing up to 24 children. These overcrowding issues, alongside staff shortages, have been linked to increased teacher stress and difficulties managing special needs. This follows a broader decline in literacy, as PISA results showed a 21-point drop in reading comprehension among 15-year-olds since 2022.

Building on these systemic pressures, national debates have emerged regarding the expansion of preschool hours. While some government investigations suggest mandatory preschool to aid language development and support parents meeting activity requirements, critics argue this may prioritize labor market participation and integration over the well-being of children. Educators have expressed concern that extended hours in high-stimulation environments could lead to exhaustion, potentially sacrificing a child’s need for rest and family time.
