Sweden election results show narrow margin between political blocs

The recent Swedish general election has resulted in a highly competitive landscape, with preliminary results showing a razor-thin margin between political blocs. The center-left opposition, led by the Social Democrats under Magdalena Andersson, holds a narrow lead of approximately three seats in the Riksdag over Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing coalition.

In a notable shift, the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) experienced a decline in support, dropping from 20.54% of the vote in 2022 to 17.48% in 2026. This loss saw their parliamentary presence decrease from 73 to 62 seats. Consequently, the Moderate Party has overtaken the Sweden Democrats as the second-largest force in the country, leading the center-right bloc.

The final outcome remains subject to uncertainty as officials continue to count overseas ballots from over 250,000 Swedish expats. The close results present challenges for government formation, as the center-left bloc seeks to secure enough support to govern despite the narrow margin.
