Sweden holds Preparedness Week to strengthen national total defense

Sweden is conducting Beredskapsveckan (Preparedness Week) 2026, centered on the theme ‘You are part of Sweden’s total defense’. The campaign, led by the Swedish Civil Defence Agency (MCF), aims to increase public knowledge regarding individual and societal readiness for crises and disruptions.

Citizens are encouraged to be able to manage their basic needs, such as food, water, and warmth, independently for at least seven days. Local municipalities, including Gävle, Varberg, and Gothenburg, are hosting activities and lectures to provide practical advice on home preparedness and fire safety.

In addition to individual efforts, various institutions are conducting exercises and reinforcing their own readiness. Region Blekinge organized a major medical preparedness exercise involving over 200 personnel from the military, police, and emergency services. Region Stockholm is also highlighting how healthcare systems prioritize resources and maintain continuity during prolonged crises. The Swedish Red Cross emphasizes that human compassion and local volunteers are essential components of national resilience, providing psychosocial support during accidents and social unrest.
