Sweden civil defense and crisis preparedness

Sweden is conducting various initiatives to enhance civil defense and crisis preparedness. Municipalities, including Västerås, Karlstad, Kristianstad, and Göteborg, have implemented tests of emergency shelters to evaluate functionality and the human experience. In Grums, participants have simulated conditions such as electricity loss and ventilation management to refine emergency protocols under the monitoring of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.

Building on these infrastructure tests, the nation held Preparedness Week (Beredskapsveckan) 2026, centered on the theme ‘You are part of Sweden’s total defense’. This campaign, led by the Swedish Civil Defence Agency, aims to increase public knowledge regarding individual and societal readiness. Citizens are encouraged to manage basic needs, such as food, water, and warmth, independently for at least seven days. Local municipalities, including Gävle and Varberg, have hosted activities and lectures on home preparedness and fire safety.

Institutional readiness is also being reinforced through large-scale exercises. Region Blekinge organized a medical preparedness exercise involving over 200 personnel from the military, police, and emergency services. Complementing these efforts, Region Stockholm continues to highlight strategies for maintaining healthcare continuity through resource prioritization. Throughout these initiatives, the Swedish Red Cross emphasizes that human compassion and local volunteers are essential components of national resilience, providing necessary psychosocial support during accidents and social unrest.
