Sweden EV adoption driven by high-income owners and home charging

A large-scale survey conducted by M Sverige reveals that current electric vehicle (EV) owners in Sweden are primarily high-income individuals with the ability to charge vehicles affordably at home. The study, involving over 6,400 respondents, suggests that home charging capabilities have been a more significant factor in EV adoption than previous climate bonuses.

Simultaneously, data regarding Sweden’s EV subsidy program shows that more than half of applicants have been denied support by Naturvårdsverket. Out of 22,782 applications, only 9,697 were approved as of September 20. Carl-Erik Stjernvall of M Sverige criticized the eligibility criteria as ‘unreasonably complicated,’ noting that factors such as household income, number of children, and capital gains affect outcomes.

Naturvårdsverket officials stated that high income is a primary reason for denials, clarifying that the assessment considers total household income—including pensions and capital surpluses—rather than just individual salaries. There is also a noted shortage of affordable used electric vehicles on the market.
