Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Swedish Social Democrats, has returned her mandate to form a government after failing to secure a stable coalition. Despite her centre-left bloc winning a narrow majority of 176 seats in the Riksdag, political deadlock has emerged due to irreconcilable differences between key allies.

The impasse was triggered by the Left Party's decision to support the Moderate Party's Andreas Norlén for Speaker of Parliament rather than the Social Democrats' candidate, Johanna Haraldsson. While the Left Party stated its support for Norlén was based on his experience and perceived neutrality, Andersson noted that this move created a new parliamentary constellation that makes her leadership unviable under current conditions.

A primary obstacle to a centre-left government is the conflict between the Left Party and the Centre Party. The Left Party demands inclusion in a governing coalition, while the Centre Party has drawn a red line against participating in any government that includes the Left Party.

Speaker Andreas Norlén, who was re-elected on Monday, will meet with party leaders to determine the next steps in the government formation process. Outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson remains a potential candidate to lead future negotiations.
