Sweden faces election fraud allegations and rising online hate

Political discourse in Sweden is facing challenges regarding election integrity and online harassment. Political scientist Jan Teorell and associate professor John Högström note that while the Swedish manual voting system is difficult to hack, the handling of physical ballots remains a vulnerability. They clarify that while individual incidents of missing ballots or voters removing opposing party slips occur, there is no evidence of intentional fraud designed to manipulate election outcomes.

Simultaneously, there has been a rise in online hate speech during election periods. Alaa Zayoud, a resident of Söderhamn, reported receiving significant online harassment after an interview regarding immigrant employment and voter turnout. Researcher Jullietta Stoencheva observes that topics such as integration and gender identity become more polarized during election cycles, often leading to the demonization of specific groups.
