Sweden faces food security risks amid rising prices and climate threats

Sweden faces mounting challenges regarding food security and rising costs. Global food prices have reached their highest levels in over three years, driven by geopolitical tensions, including conflicts affecting fertilizer and grain exports, and significant crop failures in Europe. The industry organization Coceral estimates that summer heat has reduced expected grain harvests in the EU and UK by approximately nine million tons.

Adding to these pressures, the El Niño weather phenomenon is expected to be one of the strongest since the 1950s, potentially causing droughts in Australia and Indonesia and heavy rains in South America. Economists warn that these combined factors could drive Swedish inflation higher, as decreased European production increases reliance on imports.

In response to the need for increased domestic production, Sweden is looking toward aquaculture. While Sweden currently imports about 90 percent of its farmed fish, new regulations implemented on July 1 aim to bolster the competitiveness of the domestic aquaculture industry. Proponents argue that expanding sustainable, certified fish production is a strategic necessity for national food preparedness and resilience.
