Sweden faces migration policy impacts and election security threats

Sweden is facing dual challenges ahead of its upcoming elections: a tightening migration policy impacting the healthcare sector and heightened concerns regarding foreign information interference driven by artificial intelligence.

Healthcare professionals warn that stricter immigration rules threaten the stability of the medical workforce. According to the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR), 37% of specialist doctors and 53% of nursing assistants in the country were born abroad. While many specialists meet the new, higher income requirements for work permits, many nursing assistants and caregivers do not, leading to fears of staffing shortages.

Simultaneously, the Swedish government is increasing defenses against foreign interference and disinformation. The Swedish Psychological Defence Agency recently identified a network of approximately 1,200 fake accounts on X, partially powered by AI, which had generated over 50,000 posts to exert malicious influence. With one in ten Swedes using AI to inquire about political or social issues, authorities are focused on protecting the integrity of the democratic process.
