Sweden faces mixed trends in electric vehicle adoption
The transition to electric vehicles in Sweden is facing distinct challenges across different sectors. In the heavy transport industry, electrification is stalling. Despite EU mandates to reduce CO2 emissions from new trucks by 2040, the share of electric heavy vehicles over 16 tons has remained stagnant at approximately 7-8 percent. Experts suggest that high costs, inadequate charging infrastructure, and low diesel taxes are discouraging transport companies from switching from diesel to electric, potentially impacting major Swedish manufacturers like Volvo and Scania.
In the passenger vehicle market, electric vehicle adoption is rising, with electric cars accounting for 49 percent of new registrations in Sweden this September. However, this shift is creating a lucrative market for tire manufacturers. Because electric vehicles are significantly heavier due to batteries and feature faster acceleration, they cause increased tire wear. Estimates suggest that the extra weight and performance characteristics can cause tires to wear out 20 to 50 percent faster than those on internal combustion engine vehicles, driving higher demand for replacement tires.
