Sweden and Finland face wild boar population and disease crises

Sweden and Finland are facing significant challenges regarding wild boar populations. In Sweden, the population has reached record levels, with Naturvårdsverket estimating over 570,000 animals before the hunting season. This surge has led to increased traffic accidents and substantial agricultural damage. While new regulations aim to facilitate the sale of wild boar meat to reduce the population, hunters report that high administrative costs and strict testing requirements for parasites and cesium remain barriers to commercializing the meat.

In Finland, the situation is complicated by an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). The disease has been detected in 19 wild boars in southeastern Finland, prompting the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) to implement strict containment measures. These include movement restrictions in affected areas like Virolahti and Miehikkälä, and prohibitions on certain activities to prevent spread. Local hunters and agricultural stakeholders expressed concern that the epidemic could lead to long-term economic losses for forestry and farming if the disease spreads further into regions like Uusimaa.
