Sweden faces severe water shortages in rivers and groundwater
Sweden is experiencing significant water scarcity, with low water levels affecting numerous rivers and groundwater supplies. In 14 counties, groundwater levels are low, and ten counties report shortages in watercourses. Rivers such as Svartån in Västmanland have reached critical levels, while in Blekinge, the Silletorpsån river faces near-zero flows, necessitating the emergency relocation of threatened freshwater pearl mussels.
Experts from SMHI attribute these conditions to a year-long precipitation deficit. The drought impacts agriculture, water supplies, and local ecosystems. In the Fryken region, water levels have remained low throughout the summer. To maintain minimum levels in Fryken, the energy company Fortum may be forced to draw water from lakes Rottnen and Röjden. Challenges are compounded by outdated water regulations from the 1950s and shifting climate patterns, such as earlier spring floods, which complicate water management.
