Water scarcity and drought in Sweden
Overview
Sweden is experiencing significant water scarcity driven by a year-long precipitation deficit. Initially, the situation was highlighted in Blekinge, where groundwater levels fell far below normal. The County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) ordered an immediate halt to unauthorized water extraction from regional streams to protect aquatic life in watercourses such as Bräkneån and Gallån.
As the shortage progressed, the crisis expanded across the country, with 14 counties reporting low groundwater levels and ten counties reporting shortages in watercourses. In Blekinge, the Silletorpsån river reached near-zero flows, requiring the emergency relocation of freshwater pearl mussels. Other regions, such as Västmanland, saw rivers like the Svartån reach critical levels.
Experts from SMHI note that the drought impacts agriculture, water supplies, and local ecosystems. In the Fryken region, low water levels may necessitate drawing water from lakes Rottnen and Röjden. Management of these resources is further complicated by shifting climate patterns and outdated water regulations from the 1950s.
