Sweden implements forest policy reforms to boost biomass supply

The Swedish government has announced changes to the regulatory letters for the Swedish Forest Agency and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) for the 2026 budget year. These decisions aim to strengthen the supply of domestically produced, sustainable biomass and provide a more systematic basis for decision-making regarding forest resources.

As part of what is described as the largest forest policy reform in over 30 years, the Swedish Forest Agency is granted a mandate to review and develop regulations and monitoring of forestry to increase growth and biomass availability. The agency will also be tasked with developing a continuous evaluation of forest policy production goals, including the creation of specific indicators. The first report on these evaluations is scheduled for 2027.
