Sweden launches research to bolster district heating resilience

New research initiatives in Sweden are focusing on enhancing the reliability and efficiency of district heating systems as part of the broader energy transition. Dalarna University is coordinating three research projects, supported by approximately 7.8 million SEK from the Swedish Energy Agency, to investigate infrastructure improvements, optimized energy use in buildings, and more equitable benefits from the energy transition.

Simultaneously, a project led by Luleå University of Technology and the Norrbotten County Administrative Board is using Norrbotten as a test environment to develop systematic preparedness models for district heating. This research aims to identify and mitigate economic, technical, climate-related, digital, and geopolitical risks, including cyber threats and extreme weather. The goal is to create a robust model for heat supply that can be applied across Sweden to ensure stability during periods of severe cold and supply chain disruptions.
