Sweden proposes expanding repatriation grants to citizens

Sweden is implementing a voluntary repatriation program where refugees and individuals with protected status can receive up to 32,000 euros per person, or approximately 55,000 euros per family, to permanently return to their countries of origin. Despite a significant increase from previous levels, interest in the program has remained relatively low; to date, 137 individuals have received support out of 617 applications, with many rejected because applicants obtained Swedish citizenship during the process.

The Swedish Democrats, a center-right party, have proposed expanding this program to include individuals who have already acquired Swedish citizenship, provided they renounce it and leave the country permanently. Proponents argue this addresses integration challenges, while critics warn of potential discrimination and the devaluation of citizenship.

To qualify for the current benefits, applicants must not have debts to bailiffs or the state, must not be serving prison sentences, and cannot be planning to move to another EU or EEA country. Migration Minister Johan Forsell has stated the goal is to provide options for those who feel unintegrated, while promising strengthened controls to prevent abuse.
