Sweden offers repatriation payments to migrants
Sweden is implementing a hardline immigration policy overhaul that includes offering voluntary repatriation payments to migrants. Under the current coalition government, which is supported by the Sweden Democrats, the state offers 600,000 Swedish kronor (approximately £45,900) to migrants willing to relinquish their residency permits.
While repatriation offers were previously rare, the government has increased the payment amount, resulting in 171 people receiving the grant so far this year. The policy shift comes amid the introduction of some of the strictest asylum laws in Europe and a political movement toward zero migration. The upcoming general election is viewed as a referendum on these radical shifts in migration policy.
