Sweden pension updates: AMF reforms and self-employed statistics

Recent data and policy changes are impacting the Swedish pension landscape. Social insurance statistics indicate that new self-employed retirees are receiving an average initial age pension of 1,141.20 euro per month, based on data accumulated through July 2026. This is approximately 79 euro more per month than those already in retirement, who receive an average of 1,062.09 euro.

There are notable differences based on retirement timing: those opting for early retirement receive an average of 1,342.93 euro per month, while those retiring at the standard age receive 1,111.54 euro.

In the private sector, AMF has announced a restructuring of its traditional occupational pension starting January 1, 2027. This change affects 4.3 million savers and involves increasing equity exposure during the working years to seek higher returns. According to CEO Tomas Flodén, this shift could result in over 1,000 kronor more per month for a customer who works a full career.

Separately, Sweden has dropped to 22nd place in the Global Retirement Index by Natixis Investment Managers. While the country maintains high scores in health and quality of life, it saw a decline due to lower scores in material prosperity and unemployment rates.
