Swedish pension and self-employed economic shifts
Overview
Sweden is experiencing shifts in its pension and labor cost landscape. Recent data shows that new self-employed retirees receive an average monthly age pension of 1,141.20 euro, which is approximately 79 euro more than existing retirees. Additionally, the private sector firm AMF has announced a restructuring of its traditional occupational pension effective January 1, 2027, which will increase equity exposure for 4.3 million savers to pursue higher returns.
Concurrently, rising inflation is impacting projected costs for the self-employed. Following a 4.3% increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August, simulations suggest the minimum interprofessional wage (SMI) for 2027 may rise from the 2026 rate of 1,221 euro per month to approximately 1,273.50 euro. This increase could raise the annual cost per worker for self-employed employers from roughly 22,590 euro to 23,580 euro.
