Sweden proposes stricter rules for family reunification

The Swedish government and the Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna) intend to implement stricter requirements for immigrants seeking family reunification. The proposed changes aim to increase the income threshold required to bring relatives, such as spouses or children under 18, to Sweden by 30 percent.

Under the new proposal, certain types of financial support, including unemployment benefits (a-kassa) and activity support (aktivitetsstöd), would no longer count toward the required income level. Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated that the current rules are insufficient and have contributed to social issues, such as overcrowding and people feeling excluded from society. The objective of these measures is to ensure that immigrants can support themselves and their families, thereby improving integration.
