Sweden receives first delivery of BAE Systems Archer 8x8 howitzers
The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) has completed the first delivery of BAE Systems Archer 8x8 mobile howitzers to the Swedish Armed Forces. This delivery is part of a $500 million contract signed in 2023 for 48 artillery systems.
The new Archer 8x8 systems feature an upgraded 8x8 armored truck platform, providing higher road speeds of 80-90 km/h compared to the previous 6x6 version. The system is designed for high mobility and survivability, capable of moving to a firing position in approximately 20 seconds and relocating within two minutes after firing six rounds to avoid counter-battery fire. The artillery can reach ranges exceeding 50 kilometers depending on the ammunition used.
These initial units will be utilized by the Bergslagen Artillery Regiment A 9. Further deliveries are expected in the autumn, increasing the number of systems dedicated to training to six. The program is scheduled for completion by 2030, with the goal of strengthening long-range artillery capabilities in southern Sweden and Gotland.
