Swedish Archer 8x8 artillery procurement
Overview
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has initiated the delivery of BAE Systems Archer 8x8 mobile howitzers to the Swedish Armed Forces. This marks the first phase of a $500 million contract for 48 artillery systems, with the full program expected to conclude by 2030.
The new 8x8 variant utilizes a German-made RMMV HX2 chassis, replacing the previous 6x6 Volvo platform. This upgrade increases road speeds to approximately 90 km/h and enhances survivability through rapid deployment and relocation capabilities. The systems are designed to reach firing readiness in roughly 20 seconds and can displace quickly after firing to avoid counter-battery fire.
Initial units will be used for training, specifically by the Bergslagen Artillery Regiment A 9. The procurement involves international cooperation, including BAE Systems Bofors, Rheinmetall AG, and Hanwha Aerospace. The long-term goal of the acquisition is to bolster Sweden’s long-range artillery capabilities in southern Sweden and on the island of Gotland.
