Sweden sees rising EV market share amid subsidy shifts

Sweden is experiencing a significant shift in its automotive market as electric vehicle (EV) adoption rises despite changes to national subsidy programs. While the previous climate bonus for new vehicles has expired, the market is reorganizing based on price-performance ratios. In September, EVs held a 49 percent market share, a notable increase from 38 percent in the previous year, while plug-in hybrids saw a decline in both market share and volume.

To support the transition, particularly for lower-income households, a program funded by the 400 million euro EU Climate Social Fund is providing financial assistance. Eligible drivers—those earning less than 80 percent of the national average wage and living in rural areas—can receive up to 120 euros per month for leasing costs and a one-time bonus of 1,600 euros.

This initiative has attracted over 20,000 applicants since its introduction in March. According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, nearly 90 percent of these purchases involve used vehicles. The long-term goal of the program is to enable 115,000 households to move away from fossil fuels.
