Sweden to deploy fighter jets and warships to Finland
The Swedish military will deploy Gripen fighter aircraft and corvettes to Finland to assist in surveillance and territorial protection through at least the end of 2026. The Finnish armed forces stated that this Swedish equipment will specifically enhance aerial surveillance, allowing Finnish resources to focus on preventing incursions and incidents.
Swedish Defense Minister Pål Johnson noted that the deployment responds to a Finnish request to strengthen air defenses due to a deteriorating security situation. The agreement allows Swedish forces to assist in repelling violations of Finnish territory. In addition to aircraft and vessels capable of engaging unmanned aerial vehicles, Sweden may provide ground-based anti-drone systems.
This security cooperation comes amid concerns regarding military drones entering the airspace of Finland and Baltic nations, fueled by the ongoing war in Ukraine and strikes on Russian ports in the Baltic Sea. Separately, the Swedish company SAAB announced it won a 126 million dollar contract to supply Finland with RBS 70 NG portable air defense missile systems.
