Sweden to deploy military units and Gripen jets to Finland

Sweden is significantly increasing its military presence in Finland to bolster regional deterrence and protect NATO’s eastern flank. Following a request from Helsinki, Stockholm is deploying JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets and Visby-class stealth frigates to patrol strategic areas in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland.

Swedish air units will provide 24/7 airspace protection at the Rovaniemi and Kuopio air bases. The deployment is expected to last at least until the end of 2026. Additionally, Sweden may contribute ground-based anti-drone systems later this autumn to address recent security concerns involving unauthorized drones in the region.

In a related development, the Swedish company SAAB has secured a 126 million dollar contract to supply Finland with RBS 70 NG portable air defense missile systems. This military cooperation aims to strengthen the collective defense of the two newest NATO members amid deteriorating security conditions near the Finnish-Russian border.
