Sweden to deploy Patriot air defense systems to Poland

Sweden has announced it will deploy Patriot air defense systems to Poland as part of a NATO mission, marking the first time the nation has deployed these high-end defenses within the alliance. Approximately 100 personnel from the Swedish Air Defense Regiment are scheduled to begin their deployment in December, with the mission expected to continue through the first half of 2027.

The deployment aims to protect a critical NATO logistics hub in southeastern Poland, which serves as a primary transit point for military and civilian aid to Ukraine under the Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) mission. Sweden will take over this rotational role from the Netherlands.

In addition to the ground-based Patriot batteries, Swedish Saab Gripen fighter jets are conducting flights over Polish airspace to support the protection of the logistics center. Defense Minister Pål Jonson noted that the mission will provide Sweden with significant operational and strategic experience while contributing to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) efforts.
