Sweden to implement stricter family reunification rules
New regulations for family reunification in Sweden are set to take effect on October 1, 2026. Following a decision by the Riksdag, the updated rules align Swedish policy with the minimum standards required by EU law.
Under the new rules, individuals with temporary residence permits must generally have resided in Sweden for two years before family members can be granted permits through reunification. Exceptions apply to certain groups, including refugees whose relationships were established before arrival in Sweden and, in some instances, unaccompanied minors. Labor migrants, researchers, and doctoral students are exempt from this two-year waiting period.
Additionally, the financial maintenance requirement will increase to 1.30 times the standard social welfare amount plus actual housing costs. Income from subsidized employment, unemployment insurance, or activity support cannot be used to meet this requirement, though the income of family members may be included. To sponsor a spouse or partner and two children, a pre-tax monthly salary of approximately 52,860 SEK is required.
