Sweden to purchase HIMARS rocket system in $729 million deal
Sweden has authorized the purchase of the M142 HIMARS rocket artillery system from Lockheed Martin, a deal valued at approximately 7 billion SEK (roughly $729 million). The acquisition includes more than ten launchers and a significant quantity of guided ammunition. The system is intended to complement Sweden's existing Archer artillery, providing long-range precision strike capabilities with ranges between 80 and 300 kilometers, while future ammunition could extend this to 500 kilometers.
As part of the agreement, Saab and Lockheed Martin will collaborate to produce ammunition within Sweden to ensure supply security. Additionally, Sweden and Finland have signed a joint declaration to enhance cooperation regarding guided rocket ammunition, covering training, maintenance, and industrial production. This move aims to strengthen Nordic interoperability and collective NATO defense capabilities on the northern flank of Europe. Deliveries are expected to begin as early as 2027.
